Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. (Isaiah 58: verse 10 & 11)

This year St Raphael’s Church and St Joseph’s school are working together to raise funds for a special group of children living in Udavum Karangal (Helping Hands) which is based in India.  One of St Joseph’s parents visited the orphanage last year and brought their need to our attention.

Udavum Karangal (Helping Hands) is a registered non-governmental, non-religious and non-profit social service organization, established in 1983, with the sole objective of serving people in distress who are orphans & destitutes.

Udavum Karangal's humble beginnings trace back to 1983, when Mr Vidyaakar (the founder of this charity) began his work in a voluntary counselling and guidance centre, as a professional social worker, in the slums of Chennai. A puny, dehydrated, wailing baby boy was brought by a rickshaw puller, who had found it, abandoned in a cinema hall, after a night show.  Since then there has been no looking back - neither for Mr Vidyaakar nor for Udavum Karangal.

It was one man’s resolve to help the needy that gave hope to the lives of thousands.

Udavum Karangal extends help & succour and a new lease of life to nearly 2000 unfortunate persons from new born babies, abandoned or orphaned to old dying destitutes. The centre provides individualized services, treatment, care, rehabilitation and education to those in distress. After 22 long years, the institution has grown from strength to strength and it now houses and cares for more than 2000 residents.

If you would like to make a contribution or would like to get more details about this orphanage then please contact St. Raphael's Church  or you can email: rajitha1801@yahoo.co.uk

You can also visit their website on: http://www.udavumkarangal.org

A little something that you can give would make a huge difference to a child’s life.
